Welcome to Be:Unique

If crowded gyms aren’t for you, they aren’t for us either

Be:Unique is a small, private gym on Cattedown Road. We keep membership numbers low on purpose, so every member can be properly looked after, from the first session to the hundredth.

Most people who come to us haven’t trained in a while. Some have never really enjoyed exercise. Some joined a big gym once, were shown round, and never quite knew what to do next. If that sounds like you, you’re in good company here.

This isn’t about quick results. It’s about making training part of your week in a way that feels good, and that you can keep doing for years. Our mission says it best: to educate and empower a lifetime of change.

And if you’re feeling a bit nervous, that’s completely normal. Everyone is at first. We’ve got you.

Sound familiar?

The things people tell us before they start

We hear the same worries every week, usually from people who go on to love it here.

“I need to get fit first.”

The gym is where getting fit starts. Your coach sets every exercise at the right level for you from the first session, and builds from there.

Mechelle lives with chronic pain and had avoided gym work for years. Now: I’m lifting more than I ever thought I could imagine.

“I’m too old to start.”

Strength matters more as we get older, not less. We coach people in their forties, fifties, sixties and beyond, and plenty of them started later than they’d like.

Steve wrote to us at 67, after more than 13 years training with Paul: he has transformed my attitude to physical fitness, strength and mental well being.

“I won’t know what to do.”

You don’t need to. Your coach teaches you each movement one to one, then writes your programme down, exercise by exercise, so you know exactly what to do on the days you train on your own.

Mark joined gyms before and gave up: Previous gyms that I joined never introduced me properly to the equipment. Now he has the confidence to exercise any day or time of the week.

“I’ve tried before and it didn’t stick.”

That’s useful to know. Usually something got in the way: training alone, a plan that didn’t fit your week, or nobody noticing when you stopped coming. Here, somebody notices.

Katie: I’ve never really stuck at anything exercise related before or found excuses but this time is different.

“Big gyms aren’t for me.”

Nor us. Membership is kept small, members have their own key code, and you won’t queue for a bench or feel like you’re being watched. It’s calm, it’s friendly, and there’s room to train.

Richard summed it up: totally relaxed atmosphere and sessions to suit all ages.

“I’m nervous about walking in.”

Completely normal. Your first visit is a chat and a look round with your coach, at a quiet time, before you lift anything at all.

Mike had never been a “gym person”: All the staff are understanding and welcoming of all levels of fitness and will guide you on your own path to healthy living.

Jemma had never enjoyed exercise. Now she’s never regretted a workout

In November 2025, Jemma and Paul were filmed at the gym for the NHS South West “Stay Active” winter campaign, and featured on ITV News West Country.

I’ve always had an issue with my weight and I think the bigger you get, the harder it is to engage in exercise. I wanted to find something that would just give me a bit of confidence and make me realise that I can do it.

Training has helped her lose weight she hadn’t been able to shift before. It’s also changed how she feels: on ITV she talked about leaving a high-pressure job, being “a lot less stressed and a lot happier”, and having the time to look after herself so she can look after her family.

Everybody goes to an exercise class for the first time at some point. It’s the one thing you can do for yourself that nobody else can do. So, actually put yourself first and just go for it.

I’ve not lost loads of weight, but I have lost inches and more importantly, I’m stronger. I’m lifting more than I ever thought I could imagine, I’m motivated by my PT and the gym itself is like a little gym family and I look forward to going.

Who we help

All sorts of people train here

What they have in common is that they wanted some help, and a quieter, friendlier place to get it.

Starting from scratch

Never lifted a weight? Good. We’ll teach you everything, one step at a time.

Coming back

After years off, a busy career or a family to raise, we’ll help you rebuild at a sensible pace.

Looking after a body that complains

A bad back, a knee, chronic pain, the menopause. We plan round it, from rehab to strength.

Staying strong for life

Strength keeps you doing the things you love, whatever your age. Some members have trained with Paul for over a decade.

Meet the founder

Hi, I’m Paul

I started Be:Unique, and I’ve been coaching people in Plymouth for more than fifteen years.

Most of what I’ve learned comes down to habits. Small changes you can keep up for years do far more for you than a hard six weeks you never want to repeat. So we set realistic goals together, and we get there with support, patience and a bit of education along the way.

I love seeing people come through the door lacking a bit of confidence, not sure they’re able, and then getting results they’re proud of and carrying on long after. That’s why I keep Be:Unique small.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. Most people start with us because they’ve been out of it for a while. Your coach sets everything at your level and builds from there.

Is it busy?

We keep membership numbers limited on purpose, so it stays calm and there’s room to train. Members also have their own key code to come in and work through their programme.

What is the 30 day intro?

Four one-to-one personal training sessions and a month to settle in. You learn the equipment and the movements with a coach, and you leave with a plan for the days you train on your own.

Can I train with a friend or my partner?

Yes. Buddy training is two people with one coach, so you share the session and keep each other going.

I’ve got a bad knee or back. Can I still train?

Usually, yes. Tell us about it in your first session and we’ll plan round it, choosing the exercises and weights that suit your body.

Am I too old to start lifting weights?

No. Strength training helps more as we get older, and plenty of our members started in their forties, fifties or sixties. Your coach starts you at a level that suits your body and builds up gradually.

What is a private gym, and how does the key code work?

It’s a members’ gym with numbers kept small, so it’s calm and you won’t queue for kit. Each member has their own key code to let themselves in and work through their programme when they’re not with a coach.

What happens after the 30 days?

In your last session we look at how the month went and talk through the options: gym membership, more personal training, bootcamp, or a mix. No pressure either way.

How much does it cost?

It depends on what suits you, from gym membership to personal training or bootcamp. Send us a message and we’ll talk you through the options.
